The Checkpoint: Hollow Knight

Video games have been an integral part of the COVID era for many. Over the past two years, many have found a new pastime in gaming, or used it as a social lifeline to stay in touch with friends. Whether you are a gaming veteran or someone new to the hobby, this series of recommendations will be sure to introduce you to something new.

The first game up is “Hollow Knight” (Team Cherry, 2017). This charming indie game has you, the nameless protagonist, descend into the depths of a ruined kingdom and discover the secrets of a forgotten land. Don’t let the cute, hand-drawn artstyle fool you though, the game can get dark at times.

The massive map contains many unique biomes and diverse environments. From lush, royal gardens, to glittering crystal caves, to the desolate edge of the world, every area is full of interesting secrets to find.

The world is rich with lore, and those who seek it out will find out what tragedy befell the enigmatic monarch, the Pale King, and his kingdom of Hallownest. Characters such as Cornifer the Cartographer, the powerful troupe master Grimm, and the mysterious Hornet will reveal small parts of the mystery as the game goes on.

You will not get through this game without a challenge, though. While the combat system is simple, it can be very difficult to master. The basic skills become increasingly complex as the game progresses and are supplemented by a charm system that allows the player to augment and change abilities to suit their playstyles.

Whether you want to dish out devastating spells, get up close and personal with a barrage of melee attacks or just sit back and let a horde of minions do the work for you, the expertly crafted boss battles and enemy encounters will allow you to showcase your unique playstyle and put your skills to the test.

Getting lost in this somber world is an experience that can last upwards of 100 hours, so if you are in the mood to try something new, give this game a shot. “Hollow Knight” is currently available on PC, Xbox, Ps4 and Nintendo Switch
