Fortnite, a battle royale-style video game developed by Epic Games, has permanently changed the face of gaming for the better. It has greatly aided in the unprecedented rise in esports as a sustainable business model and source of legitimate wealth for players The Fortnite National Championships this past summer drew a crowd that sold out the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York for three nights, and a 16 year old took the trophy with a $3 million prize to boot. This unrivaled Fortnite craze in the esports community, and the overall impact this game has made on global culture, is one that has largely overshadowed games like Minecraft in recent years.
¨In the past two years… Fornite has undoubtedly taken esports and egaming to a level no other game has, that’s indisputable,” says self described “epic gamer” and senior at East, Chris Pei. “It has elevated video games to an economically supportable standing.”
Additionally, there are several features unique to Fortnite that Minecraft does not contain. For example, on Fortnite, players have the ability to chat through headsets during the game in ¨party chats.¨ Minecraft has no effective form of verbal communication within the game, so Facetime, Skype or phone calls must be set up to talk to friends while playing the game. Also, at face value, Fortnite is the cheaper option because it’s offered to all gamers with a console or PC for free, whereas Minecraft Java Edition costs close to $27.
Overall, Fortnite is a more sustainable game that is more universal and competitive than Minecraft. Its potential in the esports industry is much more promising, unlike Minecraft, which will likely die out in popularity again soon.
