Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is implementing a new strategy to improve student performance. In a recent note to parents, the district introduced what they call an “exciting and innovative policy meant to solve all of our problems once and for all.” The district is now requiring that all students have CHCCS-issued pencil lead when they are in school.
While this has attracted some criticism, the school board is confident that it is their best solution yet.
“Pencil lead has been at the forefront of our achievement gap for two decades now,” a CHCCS spokesperson said. “This is the first program of its kind in the state and we are to be a model for other school districts.”
Students are also happy with this decision.
“Before, it was so hard to do my work with my own pencil lead,” a senior at East Chapel Hill High said. “I cannot wait for my school-issued pencil lead. Lack of pencil lead has been the elephant in the room since my parents were students at East and I am proud to use my CHCCS-brand, 0.7875-milimeter thick, mechanical pencil lead.”
In addition to improving academic performance, CHCCS says its new program will also increase its oversight on students. To accomplish this, CHCCS has made their lead a custom thickness that only fits CHCCS-brand pencils.
“We have put sensors inside the pencils,” one member of the CHCCS school board jubilantly exclaimed. “This will allow us to monitor what students are writing and catch students who draw or write inappropriate things. In addition, we will send a 100,000,000-volt shock through the pencil if we catch a student writing anything criticizing our new policies.”
With the achievement gap solved, CHCCS says it will now focus on hallway congestion.
“Our next move is to put signs up about hallway congestion,” the CHCCS superintendent said. “As we have seen in East’s restrooms, putting signs up is very effective in supporting positive student behavior.”
