According to a new report from Mattress Firm’s corporate office, Americans are now buying on average six mattresses per week. Citing booming sales, Mattress Firms around the country are having to expand and multiply to keep up with the consumer demand.
The company’s national-level corporate offices report dramatic increases in revenue from $3.4 billion in 2018 to $12 billion in 2019.
In Durham, Mattress Firms have been popping up at a rapid rate. In the first two months of 2020 alone, New Hope Commons doubled the number of their Mattress Firm locations from two to four.
“It’s just basic economic principles,” says Steve Sketch, manager of N.C. Store No. 254. “Durham residents need more mattresses; that’s demand. We need more stores; we’re supply.”
Despite company’s and managers’ claims of exorbitant sales, Durham residents seem bewildered to see the proliferation of mattress stores within the area.
“I don’t think we’ve bought a new mattress in, oh, seven or eight years,” says Belinda Sleeper, Durham resident. “Plus, I’ve never heard anyone talk about going mattress shopping, especially not six times a week.”
Other residents have attempted purchasing mattresses from Mattress Firm stores but found the process difficult.
“I thought it was open,” says Jeffery Clifford. “But I went in and there was nobody, not even a cash register, at the desk. I probably should’ve just taken a mattress and left.”
John Eck, CEO of Mattress Firm, announced that they would continue adding locations across the country as the need for mattresses increases exponentially.
“Mattresses really are the new trend,” said Eck. “Even if you aren’t buying them, just know that everybody else is.”
