HGTV has announced that a new series is in development, a take on their classic renovation series with an unusual twist—snails seeking new shells are the stars of the show.
The show, called Snailed It, follows snails as they search for new shells to live in. The network promises to depict the reality of the embarrassment snails experience when they have a shell that is too large or too small. The show will continue the themes of inspiration and transformation as seen in other HGTV shows.
Snails that participate in the show will receive a completely remodeled shell, complete with all of the latest style trends.
Producer Todd Wellington said that working with snails can be challenging at times, but it is ultimately rewarding.
“There are a lot of communication issues because the snails cannot talk to us,” Wellington said. “It is hard to find a way to tell if a snail actually likes its new shell, but we can guess by just following gut instincts and looking at their facial expressions.”
Guest voice actors, most notably Neil deGrasse Tyson and Cardi B, will appear on the show as the voices of the snails. During production, they are instructed to speak slowly and wear snail costumes, in order to realistically depict what the snails would sound like if they could speak.
Though they have received complaints from PETA, the show will continue production and is set to release spring 2020.
Any snails looking for a new home are welcome to audition and should email toddwellington@snailmail.com.
