Read below to learn more about Grine’s self-expression, and get some great tips to diversify your own fashion.
How would you describe your style?
That’s really hard—labels are kind of funky—but honestly I just put on whatever I see in my closet where the colors go together. I stick to palettes. I really like natural colors and dark colors, like earth tones, like greens and browns, and then a lot of black.
Where do you take inspiration from?
I take inspiration from the grunge movement, and also images from Pinterest.
Who’s your fashion icon?
I take a lot of inspiration from 90s style icons like Kat Bjelland, who was the front of a band called Babes in Toyland. I also take a lot of inspiration from drag queens like Violet Chachki. I’m not nearly as extravagant or well dressed as them, but I really like watching fashion shows.
Where do you shop?
There’s this cute thrift boutique shop downtown called Rumors… They have locations on Franklin Street and in Durham, and it’s super fun. If I can’t find what I’m looking for there, I just go to a regular thrift store because my mom likes to thrift a lot so I go with her.
Why do you enjoy thrifting?
I just feel like it’s cool to wear pieces that have stories—you never know who wore this before you.
How has your style changed because of quarantine?
Before quarantine, I dressed like a nerd, but after quarantine, I just started to dress more according to what I like, and I started getting into fashion.
Any tips or advice?
When I started dressing well, it was because I was dressing in what made me feel comfortable. Don’t wear fashion that you just feel really weird in, because if you feel good, you will look a million times better.
