Do you ever notice a certain hostility between your teachers? A sudden, random burst of competitiveness, maybe even threats or trash talk? Fantasy football season is back, and this year it features a war between teachers.
East’s history department enjoys a little bit of healthy competition when allowed. Fantasy football is the perfect outlet for that spirit.
Social studies teacher Sam Atwood thinks very highly of his team, the Amish Commish.
“Honestly, I have literally 100 percent confidence I’m going to win the league,” said Atwood. “I have absolutely no fear inside of me.”Although Atwood feels very confident in his team, he isn’t the only one. When Hans Hiemstra, a Civil War and U.S. History teacher was asked if he had a chance to win, success seemed inevitable.
“I’m undefeated, the only undefeated team in the league,” said Hiemstra. “I win almost every year.”
Although some of the teachers, like Atwood and Hiemstra, are very invested in their teams, some of the history teachers don’t even create their own.
“There are about five teams in this league that are auto-drafted, meaning they don’t choose, the computer picks their teams,” said Atwood. “They play each other, and the real teams play each other. Those teams in the other division are looking pretty bad, but that’s their own fault for not paying attention.”
Who are the real teams, you might ask? According to Atwood: Mr. Hiemstra, Mr. Atwood, Miss. Stapleton, Mr. Koplar, and two student teachers make the cut.
Barry Brown is an example of a teacher who lets the computer play his game. In fact, Brown didn’t even realize he had a team until Stephanie Stapleton, the World History and AP Euro teacher, explained that they had recently played each other.
“There’s some delightful trash talk that goes along,” said Stapleton. “Usually it begins on draft night when we shun those who decided to auto draft and then realize we lose to them. The shame of losing to the auto drafters runs strong in this league.”
In a three-way tie for first, Atwood’s team “Amish Commish,” Hiemstra’s “Game of Mahomes”, and civics teacher Brian Link’s “Team Link” all have five wins and one loss. Stapleton ended up losing to Brown’s autodrafted team, the “Carol Woods A.A.R.P.Varks,” both teachers ending with three wins and three losses. The only team without a win so far this season is Dominic Koplar’s team,“Tank Job,” who usually ends up as one of the better players in the league.
If you see your history teacher constantly checking their phone or computer, followed by angered mumbling, now you know why.
